Plant diversity is the foundation of ecosystem resilience, food security, and human health. This session will focus on the necessity of maintaining plant genetic resources, crop wild relatives, and threatened species. The experts will shed light on the causes of biodiversity decline, such as habitat loss, climate change, and invasive alien species. Conservation success stories in rainforests, wetlands, and drylands will be presented as case studies. We will learn about in situ and ex situ conservation methods like seed banks, botanical gardens, and protected areas. Molecular tool applications for measuring genetic diversity and population structure will be discussed. Topics will cover ecosystem services that plant diversity offers, ranging from pollination to carbon storage. Policy frameworks, community participation, and indigenous knowledge will also be discussed as part of conservation techniques. Audience members will better understand the imperative to conserve plant biodiversity and effective strategies for sustainable conservation during the Anthropocene.
