Phytochemistry

Phytochemistry examines the wide diversity of secondary metabolites that plants produce, which are critical to their existence and interactions with the environment. The session will discuss biosynthesis and function of phytochemicals like alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolics, and glycosides. Their roles in the defense, signaling, and stress adaptation of plants will be addressed by experts. Case studies will present how phytochemicals become vital in human nutrition, medicine, and industrial uses. Recent analytical methods like chromatography and mass spectrometry for metabolite profiling will be addressed. Bioactive compounds with antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activities will also be discussed during the session. By connecting basic plant chemistry to practical applications, this session highlights the relevance of phytochemistry in the development of new medicines, functional foods, and green bioproducts and in unearthing the cryptic chemical language of plants.
